Website Redesign

PCS Launches Redesigned Website

How do you go about redesigning a website that is the online equivalent of "The Winchester Mystery House"? The PCS website redesign project began in 2015 as a collaboration between the school’s administrative leadership, board of directors, committee volunteers, parents, teachers, students and our website platform vendor, Edlio. Our community unanimously agreed that was overdue for a redesign—not just to look more up-to-date, but to showcase our community and present information in a more intuitive manner.

A Website Redesign committee was formed in 2016 under the leadership of Development Director Paula Kenyon and Volunteer/Board Member Diana Holm, who as co-founder and CMO of FileOpen Systems brought the website experience needed to shepherd the project from start to finish.

The committee included administrative staff, teachers, parents, current and past board members. At each stage of the redesign, the committee sought feedback from various groups of teachers, staff, parents, and students.

Working with Edlio, who provided the design template, the committee chose a new color scheme and layout that reflects the bold aesthetics of our new campus. Then the committee set about remaking the information architecture of the site from the ground up. This process (which started out using a decidedly low-tech but effective process of sticky notes!) involved purging old pages, reorganizing content in more logical departments, and segmenting the website’s audience into its constituents (parents, students, faculty/staff and outside community).

The committee also engaged in many hours of discussion about the image and messaging the website should convey to our school community and to the outside world. How could the new website communicate what is unique and special about PCS? A professional photographer was brought in to capture the daily life of PCS students, and the committee exhaustively gathered and catalogued photos contributed by teachers, parents and students to include on the site. New pages were created to highlight important aspects of our community—about Diversity and EquityLife at PCSSocial and Emotional Support, and more.

Finally, in a new twist in the Staff Directory, our faculty and staff took the time to interview and write bios for each other, which we are sure you will find insightful and entertaining (click on the person’s name in the staff directory to read their bio). This truly has been a team effort, and will continue to evolve and improve with the help of our community.
