Sonya Kiernan by Anne Marie Hutchison, World Language Teacher
Sonya Kiernan, otherwise known as the hub of the PCS universe, was born in Washington and raised in Oregon. Her heart is still in Oregon. She came to live in Santa Cruz five years ago after her husband received his PhD. They have been married for 24 years, and as a celebration next year for the big 25 they will be taking an “epic” trip to Scotland and Ireland. She has two daughters, one who attends the University Oregon and one who is an alumni of U of O. Cooper is the family dog.
Before coming to PCS, Sonya received her Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science from Southern Oregon University. She also did a stint as a dental assistant. She said that if she were not at PCS she would consider being a nurse. Her volunteer activities have included coordination of an elementary school garden program. She says that she came to PCS for the job, but then has stayed for the faculty, staff, and students who are her second family.
In her free time Sonya camps, usually in Oregon, kayaks in the Santa Cruz Harbor, and hikes here and in the Yosemite back country. She has spent many summers fishing in Southeast Alaska. Sonya also enjoys reading, gardening, and wine tasting. Her favorite hobby is thrift shopping. She would recommend reading The Goldfinch. A last interesting fact about Sonya is that she spent her junior year of high school in a remote Alaskan Indian village where Tlingit is spoken. Sonya is a gift to PCS and is always positive and helpful to everyone.
