Our wonderful Kristen Rivers was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in the Red River Valley and comes from poor, proud Scandinavian stock. Fortunately for her because she moved 19 times during her childhood, from Boston to Oregon! Being the child of a radio broadcasting superstar had its pitfalls as well as perks and her tenacity and open heart were born of always being, “the new kid”. After attending four junior high schools and three high schools she moved to California on her own and has called it home ever since. She received a BA in Environmental Education from San Jose State and a teaching credential from National University.
Kristen has always been a forward thinker and entrepreneur. For example, she ran SLVUSD Charter Fall Creek School, one of the first nature-based charter schools in California for fourteen years. She is also the founder and director of a non-profit organization called The Artemis Project. For the past 15 years Kristen has been doing curriculum design and development related to her passion, social and emotional intelligence; for which she consults with organizations and teaches workshops all over the West Coast. For more than 20 years she has run an experiential environmental education camp in Felton for kids, romping and hiking through the State parks, sharing her love of the San Lorenzo River Watershed. She is also a published author, permaculture designer and 25 year local volunteer. One of her proudest achievements was being part of a citizens’ advisory committee that preserved the headwaters of the San Lorenzo River and with it, the rights to clean, local water in perpetuity.
Kristen has three children, a daughter aged 25 and two sons ages 18 and 15. For over a quarter century she has raised her children in a community she cherishes while serving families, children and the planet. In her free time she loves to dance and has been dancing seriously, largely modern improvisational dance, for about 10 years. She’s been practicing yoga for 30 years and she likes to hike and camp as much as possible. She loves poets and poetry – Mary Oliver and Nayyirah Waheed are just a few of many favorites. Impressively, Kristen has been journaling since she was just five and she still has ALL of these journals. Most every morning she writes between 1 to 3 pages as part of her morning self-care.
Even though she’s only been here a year, it’s hard to imagine a pre-Kristen PCS. She’s warm, welcoming and encouraging and her office is a magical space, for both students and staff (check it out!). Kristen is really excited to be at PCS and we are really excited to have her.
