Danny Sommer

By Lauren Fitts, History Teacher

When asked why Danny became a teacher he said, "Kids are the discovery zone of life, and it is so refreshing to get them excited about the world!" Danny's passion and dedication to education and the outside world are quite apparent. When speaking to Danny, he inspires you to go on an outdoor adventure and discovery. Our PCS students are thrilled!

Danny grew up in the Los Angeles area and always had an affinity for the great outdoors. He graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1990 with a degree in Environmental Studies. Danny feels that humans need to serve the planet, and his fascination with the natural world gives him the drive to inspire others to do so.

With eight years of experience as an outdoor experimental educator from an organization called Outward Bound, he brings a unique set of skills to the teaching world. Danny has extensively led multi-day outdoor explorations to explorers as young as 14 to as wise as 60. Danny smiles while he speaks of his time in the environment and open-air seeking new challenges and harnessing wilderness skills. You can tell immediately that this passion pours into his years of teaching young students. Danny also has a Master's degree in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a teaching credential from SJSU; he has been a classroom teacher for over twenty years.

Danny was first attracted to PCS because the students are eager to learn and are highly motivated; he is also delighted with the level of engagement at PCS. We are so lucky to have such a gifted and passionate educator to teach our young explorers!

If Danny could recommend one book, it would be Tribe of Mentors: Short Life Advice from The Best of The World by Tim Ferris. Tribe of Mentors consists of a series of interviews conducted by Ferris to many fascinating human beings, such as elite athletes, artists, or billionaire investors. It helped connect Danny to some of the people Ferris interviewed and was an incredible experience for him. It is yet another indicator of Danny's drive to explore and inspire others.
