Anna Sher is the Assistant Director for Assessment and Survey Research at UC Santa Cruz. She has extensive experience and expertise in assessment of student learning in higher education, data management, equity-minded analysis, survey research, program evaluation, and accreditation. After receiving her PhD degree in Sociology from Stony Brook University in New York, she joined the office for Institutional Research and Policy Studies at UC Santa Cruz and became the campus expert on assessment of student learning and survey research. She developed a methodological framework and analytical support for faculty-led assessment with a focus on identifying equity gaps in student outcomes. She worked with many faculty members on assessment studies across different academic programs at UCSC. Since 2009, she has overseen a wide range of survey projects at UCSC seeking to understand key factors in students’ decision-making processes about which college/university to attend, student experience and perceptions of inclusion and diversity at UCSC, as well as various needs of faculty, staff, and students. Prior to taking on a leading role in supporting assessment at UCSC, she worked with the UCSC Chancellor’s Advisory committee on evaluating and improving the climate for diversity, equity, and inclusion at UCSC. Anna loves spending time with her family and enjoys jazz, theater, and mystery novels.
