Parent Service is Essential to PCS Success

Parent Volunteer Association (PVA) Welcomes parents working together to support our students and the school. The PVA partners with PCS to coordinate volunteer efforts.
PCS operates with a minimum of staff and spends its precious funds on academics to the greatest extent possible. This means that a variety of support and facilities items are minimally funded, with the expectation that parents will make up the difference. The truth is, without parent work, the school wouldn't be able to fund all of our programs.

This is why the parent participation is emphasized in the school's charter, and why we ask every family to try to accomplish at least 40 hours of service work each year that their child is enrolled at PCS.
For the great majority of existing and prospective PCS parents, the fact that their energy is needed and their enthusiasm appreciated, is great news. We want to make the  process efficient, well-communicated, and reliable.
Please visit our PCS Online Directory / Volunteer Portal to learn more about volunteer opportunities. When you sign up and register your interests, it helps event leaders find volunteers. Be sure to record your volunteer hours on Volunteer Central, we like to know all of the wonderful things parents are doing to support PCS!
Whether you are a new PCS parent or are back for another year, here is what you do to get started:
  • Look for Volunteers opportunities in Today's News and in messages from Grade Parents
  • Attend PVA meetings and Parent Education Forums to get connected.
Have fun, help improve our community, and gain a lot in the process!

Are PCS parents volunteering or are they performing required work? This is a hope and an expectation, not a requirement, but please know that there is great flexibility as to when and what parents do.  Parents volunteer to do whatever best suits their skills and schedule.  Many parents volunteer far more than the requested 40 hours.

What is the average number of service hours worked per family? About 40, but many families work far more, and PCS couldn't survive without the extra efforts of these families. Some families work less, and we need to find ways to help those families meet their commitment.

Who watches to see that a given family works their 40 hours? Parents are responsible for keeping track of and then reporting their own hours.
Can I create my own job? Absolutely. If you see something that needs to be done at our school, either to build a better community or to improve school support or facilities, or to raise funds, please propose your job to the PVA leadership.

Who do you mean by the word "we" as used on this page? The PCS Parent Volunteer Association or parents of PCS students.
